Working with us...

There's been a lot of discussion about DMing (most of it understanding and supportive- thanks!)- and it just so happens that we have an SF Citadel specific DM training class coming up in May! If you're interested in DMing this is a good place to start- of course, before you can DM at the Citadel, any/all of the following might be required in addition to attending this class: References, scene experience, classes, shadow shifts, etc.

You are welcome to attend even if you are not interested in
volunteering as a DM, as this class will provide useful information on
conducting a safe scene and "fitting in" in the public dungeon
environment, as well as orientation to the SF Citadel rules and BDSM
community "norms."

Tuesday, May 13th
8PM-10PM (doors open at 7:30PM)
CASE SCENARIOS: SF Citadel Dungeon Monitor training

This class will lead you, the DM, through specific scenarios you might
encounter as you work a shift. The style of instruction be very
different from any other DM training in the Bay Area- we will have
less than ten minutes of lecture before getting down to actually
SHOWING you scenarios and letting class participants troubleshoot
these situations. This structure will allow you to learn to DM by
practicing the decision-making and intervention process in realistic
situations. By providing concentrated examples of many problems a DM
might encounter, we think this class will provide "real life" training
that will serve both experienced and novice DMs well. You could work
20 shadow shifts and never see the number of rule-breaking and unsafe
situations that you will see and manage in the two hours of this class.

Previous DM training or experience not required- this is a stand-alone
class. This training is HIGHLY recommended for all SF Citadel DM
volunteers. There is no charge for this class. For new DMs, note that
to DM at the Citadel additional orientation, scene experience, and/or
references may be required. PLEASE be familiar with SF Citadel dungeon
rules prior to attending this class- a copy of the rules can be found
on our web site www.sfcitadel. org/Rules/ Rules.html

I remember when I first ran into scenario training, I kinda poopooed the idea, although I signed up anyway. It was a 90 hour First Responder/Wilderness First Aid course, and I was absolutely stunned at how, regardless of knowing it was all staged, still, it felt absolutely real, and we really did learn what we were doing. More importantly, in the past before I'd always found most first aid type courses seemed to fade after roughly 6 weeks for most people. The scenario training completely stuck. And very complex diagnosis plus treatment training really seemed to take with scenario training, much more than the usual read-it-and-hear-it-lectured format. From that point, I've been gobsmacked at the efficacy of scenario training, although it's a huge amount of effort for trainers to arrange.

I'm really a bit stunned that you're taking on such an enormous task, Chey, but totally impressed with how much of a gift it will be for our training and ability to respond appropriately. It's gotta be a massive amount of work to set up, but I'm sure the rewards will be appreciable. And I really, really appreciate your doing it.

When I did my first DM training, our "final exam" was to DM at a play party for which the invited guests had been coached in their roles. I can remember the horror I felt at seeing a Dom begin to suspend his sub by tying a rope to her collar, even though I knew it was staged. The most fun was escorting the "drunk" out of the dungeon.
