I want a scene name!

topic posted Mon, April 14, 2008 - 4:29 PM by  offlineAstrea is No...
I've been shamelessly posting this on tribe, and I figure who better to ask that those who have gone before me...

It's come to my attention that many people who attend kinky events have a name they use to keep their identities protected, or just to be memorable.

Considering that I have such a unique name, and no plans to join the government, I've never considered the need for one. However, upon thinking about it, it would be fun to create an alter ego, and it would probably help those I meet to feel more secure in their anonymity.

So... in the tradition of Jynx: I'm calling on you, yes you, to help me come up with a scene name.

As of right now I've gotten one suggestion from Terry, which is Slut VanWalla. But I have to say this isn't my first choice, even though it's my only choice at the moment.

Feel free to post a few names if you'd like, and I will narrow them don't and come up with a final three, which you may also vote on.

PS As some of you know, my partner is the Bondage Bunny, so I've been trying to think of bun related names.

I came up with:

Ginger Bunny
Bratty Bunny
Leather Bunny
Tiger Bunny
Bunny Baloo

I also came up with:

Andrella
Liora
Skittles (taste the rainbow?)
Kisa (Russian 'cat')

My name came primarily from my rope business. But I did like the fact that it was "japanese" yet not really Japanese.

Heck it's Italian actually. I'm American born so I didn't think "Kimiko" or "Junko" would really be appropriate.

Personally I have a hard time with multiple names, it's really hard to keep track of 2 names let alone the new name for every party that some people have. So I think it needs to be something you won't forget next week. That just confuses people.

All that said, I vote for Skittles. Short and sweet.

If you feel like it would be fun to create an alter ego, then by all means do it.

One of the reasons that I choose not to use a scene name is that I don't want to create that distinction-- SM is a key component of who I am, and I want to treat it like that rather than as a costume or an identity that I put on from time to time.

Besides, for me it's just easier to keep track of one name than two. I don't want to have to remember who knows me as Patti and who knows me as some other name. I also hate having to remember that today Susan is SparklySpankyPants and I should call her that, but tomorrow I'll need to call her Susan.

A couple of years ago some friends of mine took a dungeon intro class, and one of the things that they were told is that they needed to create scene names. They seemed rather surprised by that and asked me if it was really true. I told them that Bob and Susan were perfectly fine scene names if that's what they wanted to use.

The only reason I have a scene name is that I have been using Qatana as my screen name since I got online. Its just easier to remember one sign in name and one password. In my case the name was given to me by a fellow Dickens Fair performer and I adopted it for one of my Renaissance Faire characters. So while my real name is no secret everybody who knows me through the internet knows me as Qatana.

I'm leaning toward Bratling. It's also easy to remember and apropo as well. Thoughts?

Bratling's cute. I like Kisa, as well.

I use my middle name as my scene/online name. Anyone who wants to know my first name is welcome to the knowledge, but I've found that using Grace helps me slip into a certain mindspace and feel more comfortable with myself in kink-friendly surroundings.

        gaki = Brat

        usagi = Rabbit / Bunny

combine them for: gakisagi (and at this point we're just playing with sounds)

Arbitrarily shorten it in a totally non-linguistically correct way (it's not like I know Japanese) to something a little more manageable and you get:

        "kisagi" which I like.

        Best, Steve.

Ooh! I really like "Kisa" or "Kisagi"!

Skittles is the name of one of the best known Courtesans at the end of the Victorian era. She was a pretty horsebreaker... a prostitue who rode Rotten Row. Cute, but unless you're for sale... might not wanna...

(I researched her as a potential Dickens Fair character this year)...

I like Kisa. It's short, not too difficult to remember, and cute. And the fact that it means something in another language gives you a discussion point if someone wants to ask what it means.

I should have added, when I was just getting started in the community I too heard that a scene name was required. I strugged with what it would be. I went with Vitamin A because that is an old nickname of sorts but I felt too silly telling people to call me that in person so I always introduced myself as Alan and left Vit A as the Tribe account.

Steve thats a great little piece of linguistic construction! Very similar to how I got the spelling of my name. I was named Katana, for the sword. One day someone handed me a Klingon Dictionary. I looked it up phonetically and my name as it is spelled in Klingon:

        Qa'tana-Precious Memory

Then I discovered that I am part Persian and started researching Persian stuff, one day I googled "qatana" and learned that in Farsi, Persian arabic, that Qatana means "place to live"

So now I tell people that my name translates out to "Homeland Security"

Ginger Bunny is cool, but I'm partial to the name Ginger.

BTW, no one says you have to have just one. You can introduce yourself with a new name at each event if you like. New account, new name. new event, new name. Names are cheap and easy. Everyone should have several.

Except me. My birth certificate says "teamnoir" proudly.

Scene names can be whatever you like, whether it is to conceal your identity from those who know you in the vanilla world, or to commemorate this other chapter in your life.

I guess I have a "scene name" of sorts: Alecs is actually my MIDDLE name. My ID and passport, among other things say Cass Alecs Leung. When I came out as genderqueer 5 years ago I started going by Alecs to commemorate this new chapter in my life and just saw it natural to use it in the scene too.

So yeah...you can choose to have one or not, and it can be anything.
