Many universities and countries—Japan especially—have been working in the field of robotics. More specifically they’ve been working on producing robots that mimic human expression and actions (see www.roboticspot.com/en/spot/vernot.shtml as an example). The penultimate (or nearly so) is the “Actroid” (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actroid) that is a human size, robotic “doll” that can mimic human facial expressions. Now on a completely different, but related subject, there’ve been sex dolls. These aren’t the blow-up kind you find in adult book stores. These are the cast polymer, human-configured dolls running upwards of $1,300 or more (see www.realdoll.com and dir.salon.com/story/mwt/f...index.html). (BTW, they make them in “guy” shapes too.) There is, and always has been, a convergence between the two and having a real live sex robot—one that will look “right” (after all, a lot of the turn-on process is in the mind and the visual process), and will respond emotionally (and I guess there are “right” emotions too—like not saying, “Not tonight dear, I have a headache”) to enhance the sexual experience. This is, after all, a popular film and story theme.
OK, with that said, it’s time to …thrust… to the heart of this piece. With the possibility of achieving a real sex robot within our lifetime, and given that you do win the lottery to pay for it, what would YOU like to see in a sex robot? Would anatomical features—big boobs, a 12-inch dick, a heart-shaped ass, 6-pack abs, whatever—be important? If so, what? And if you would, why? Would emotional responses—walks on the beach, romantic dinners, serving you your pretzels and beer while kneeling naked before you, etc.—be just as important? If so, what and why again? Also with “moves”—that little ‘wiggle’ at orgasm(?), smells, the way they moan, getting nipple rings ‘just for you’—the woulds, whats, and whys. Finally, does it need to be a physical device or would some sort of virtual reality or cybersuit kind of thing work?
The reason I’m posing this topic is that there are a lot of folk working on such devices right now. They break out roughly into “geeks” and “marketers”. The “geeks” (and I’m proud to call myself one) know how to build such devices, but often they suffer from ‘their own idea of good features’-ism syndrome (read, they don’t get too many dates). Rent the movie “Weird Science” to see what I mean. The “marketers” on the other hand tend to think more of “…yes it’s a turkey, but if I pitch it just right, I can make a million on it.” So it’s probably a good time for a grassroots effort. At least we’ll be able to get OUR say before it gets dictated to us.
What I’m asking for right now is for free-form responses—short or long, brief or detailed, silly or serious. (Group dynamicists will recognize this as the brainstorming process.) This will then help me to formulate a more detailed, penetrating, in-depth Phase II survey that will focus on specific features. You can respond to this by either e-mailing me directly (at UncleAbdul@gmail.com – and all such communications will be held confidential unless otherwise authorized) or in this forum.
So, are you game?

Re: What would you want in a sex doll/robot?

Personally i think we're like ten years away from any sort of virtual companion, probably more than that for any realistic cyberskin kind of thing, and I don't think it's realistic to think that we'll get any sort of true physical robots that could reasonably pass a "touch-turing test" for many many years.
(Note to self: Devise a sexual robot turing test that has something to do with a glory hole. But, I digress...)
Having said that, my ideal sex robot toy is three feet tall, has a capable mouth with no teeth, 38D breasts with nipple rings, wears roller skates and has a flat head to rest my drink on.
Steve.
p.s. yes, it's an old joke. -

Re: What would you want in a sex doll/robot?
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 9:25 AMMy question about this is:
When are we just going to get comfortable with each other and our sexuality enough so we don't need artificial people?
We've been sexually active for millions of years and we still haven't come to terms with it.
My main question is when are we going to drop the role play (especially women) that society teaches us and just COMMUNICATE what we want openly without fear of discrimination and retribution?
As far as robots go, why the hell would I want to have sex with a robot? Now, a hologram, that's different.
Make a holodeck.

Um, probably because some of us can't get real people to have sex with us. -

Re: What would you want in a sex doll/robot?

As far as I can see, the human race is doing a fine job of being comfortable enough with each other to have sex. The birth rate is a pretty clear indicator of that.
There have been sex toys that mimic body parts for almost as long as man has been around. While dildoes have been around forever, each advance in technology has brought an advance in sex toys. How many of you would carp about vibrators existing, or complaining that they shouldn't be improved because they conflict with people getting to know each other.
There are also a zillion great reasons to have sex toys (as well as porn), that may have nothing to do with the person's ability to interact with a sexual partner. Availability only being the most obvious.
<rant a la Dr. Cox in Scrubs>
Lastly, who is to say that a life led fucking a lifelike polyvinyl doll with a built in "oh God, oh God, yes, yes" soundtrack complete with multiple vibrating orifices and "patented "RealSkin" (tm) texture with Donna Summer moaning "Oh, Love to love you baby" in the dimly lit background is any better or worse than desperately using Alt, CollarMe, Adult Friend Finder, Craigslist, and, on a bad day, a bar, or in the hopes of finding a better class of cock, a "nightclub", to find their fuckbuddy for the evening after an obligatory mediocre dinner with a cheap bottle of wine before the main event begins and ends four hours later in a pile of sweaty sheets and lingering questions about sexually transmitted diseases, or one spent licking the same clit year after year after year with mathematically predictable increasing durations to achieve the same arousal leading to the same fucking in the same, honey, you know I don't like it that way, positions and afterwards drifting off together for 2.7 minutes until the screaming from the kids in the living room drags you forcibly back from the revere you were having about the time you banged your second girlfriend with the huge tits on the copy machine in the school library? Who are you to judge?

Re: What would you want in a sex doll/robot?
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 9:51 AMThis can only end badly. Remember the Fembots?
On a more serious note, the whole thing creeps me out more than a little bit. I think that things like "Real Dolls" tend to lead to unwanted objectification. If a woman (or man, for that matter) WANTS to be objectified, that's fine. But having essentially human simulations is going to push that farther than I'm comfortable with.
So to take that to the next level, I would want robot sex toys to be obviously non-human, with only the most rudimentary AIs. No self-awareness. Nothing that could be mistaken for a person at 50 feet.

Re: What would you want in a sex doll/robot?

I don't have an idea of what I'd want in a sex doll/robot, because the idea doesn't sound appealing to me. (Not that I think it's a bad thing to develop, I'm just not the market.)
OTOH, I'm waiting for the *true long distance* pain toy, presumably electric (i.e. shocking) in nature. What I'd want from such a toy/device:
- able to be turned on, off, and adjusted for both pain level and duration, by a remote person on a cell phone
- multiple attachments for different body locations (thigh bands, arm bands, insertables...)
- if possible, be able to talk on the phone to the remote person on the same cell phone at the same time (i.e. the audio and the data are both from the same cell phone)
It seems to me that most of the pieces and parts for this already exist, but I haven't seen them put together into one package.

Until we can build something that can pass the touring test, or something that can convince me that it is a new life form of it's own, I'm not interested. My hitachi works just fine and costs a lot less for simple self gratification. -

Mon, February 11, 2008 - 6:38 PM"Er... "Turing" test? "
www.google.com/search
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test
"The Turing test is a proposal for a test of a machine's capability to demonstrate intelligence. Described by Alan Turing in the 1950 paper "Computing machinery and intelligence," it proceeds as follows: a human judge engages in a natural language conversation with one human and one machine, each of which try to appear human; if the judge cannot reliably tell which is which, then the machine is said to pass the test. In order to keep the test setting simple and universal (to explicitly test the linguistic capability of the machine instead of its ability to render words into audio), the conversation is usually limited to a text-only channel such as a teletype machine as Turing suggested or, more recently, IRC or instant messaging." -

Re: What would you want in a sex doll/robot?
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 7:28 PMAnother variation to throw into the mix is something called the "chinese wall".
The thinking was that an English speaking human would be able to recognize another English speaking human by the cadence, emphasis, and knowledge of idioms. So, change this by inserting a translator between the subject under test and the tester. The translator would speak to the computer or the other human in a language the first human didn't comprehend. This would take some variables out of the equation.
I think. This is from memory, I'm sure a wiki search would fill in my gaps or make corrections. -S
